How To Avoid The Most Common SEO Mistakes In Magento
There are many online tutorials, which will help you develop your own search engine optimization strategy, but there aren’t many articles, which list the most common SEO mistakes and tell you how to avoid them. Magento is renowned for its excellent search engine optimization features, but unless you know how to use them properly, you will not be able to see their full potential. If you want your search engine optimization to be more effective, follow our tips and make sure that you do not commit the same mistake twice.
Don’t title your homepage “home”
Although the name “home” seems to be the most fitting one, you can gain so much more, if you rename your homepage using one of the keywords describing your type of business. Go to the CMS section and change the title of your homepage into something more relevant.
Turn on canonicals
If you want to avoid problems with duplicate content, turning on canonicals is a must. Remember to do it for both products and categories.
Don’t use the “default description”
The main problem with default descriptions is repetitiveness: the same phrase will be repeated countless times to describe random pages in your online store, often very inaccurately. The best thing you can do is leave the “default description” field empty. If you wonder where you can find that option, go to System > Configuration > General > Design > HTML Head. It is basic search engine optimization stuff, but make sure that your meta keywords do not include the default expression “magento ecommerce”. Change it to something more relevant to your type of business.
Change the default logo title to something else
In the top left corner of your site, you can find a logo, which often carries the default name “Magento Commerce”. Remember to change the logo title to something that is related to your e-commerce business.
The Index, Follow issue
Before you move to the live server, go to System > Configuration > General > Design > HTML Head to change default robots to “Index, Follow” and remove robots.txt disallow. It is one of the common mistakes of developers, who use the “noindex, nofollow” settings on dev stage and forget to change it before they move to the live server.
Don’t use layered navigation, unless you know how to do it right
Layered navigation is quite commonly used by online retailers, who are not aware of the problems it can cause to their SEO. Layered navigation creates hundreds or even thousands of URLs, which all have almost identical titles, descriptions and content. This problem can be avoided, however, you might need to look for Magento designer for hire to optimize the layered navigation for your online store or you have to deactivate this functionality.
Check your sitemap before sending it to Google
This is one more common mistake, which will surely have a negative effect on your SEO and Magento enterprise services. Before submitting your sitemap.xml to Google always double check its content. Make sure that the file does not contain any sample products.
