Benefits of Working for a Charity

Finding the right job in today’s competitive career’s market can be a struggle for even the most qualified and skilled professionals. Salary has always been important, but now people have started to redefine their priorities when looking for a career by exchanging high paying salaries in favour of job satisfaction and motivation.

Being happy at work has now become one of the primary factors and this brings forth one industry in particular that doesn’t necessarily provide the highest paying jobs or the benefits and perks the big brand names spit out, but it can certainly offer job satisfaction and a happy environment when good is achieved.

In the services industry, working for a charity has become one such job where high job satisfaction through helping people has attracted some top professionals. Motivation is a key factor and indicator for people to judge whether or not they are happy at work.

If someone finds they are being lazy at work, it is commonly because the job isn’t challenging enough for them anymore and they haven’t yet realised it is time to move on. Motivation, according to some theorists, is a sign of job satisfaction. According to Hackman and Oldham, two motivational theory specialists, task significance and task identity are two key factors in high motivation and high job satisfaction.

Charity Work And Motivation

Working for a charity offers both task significance and task identity. Task significance is achieved by charity workers through the satisfaction of being able to see the positive results of their work on the community or in the area they have been trying to improve. This creates a huge feeling of self satisfaction and motivates employees to do more as the impact of their efforts becomes recognised. The response from the smiley faces of helping orphaned kids or the affection of an animal in need is something most charity workers cannot describe in words, but only through emotion. The significance of making a difference is what drives charity workers to be self motivated creating a huge sense of satisfaction.

Charity work is also usually a lot of fun and moves away from the bureaucratic business systems still found in many large organisations. Charity workers often get a lot of autonomy or freedom in their role to be creative and imaginative without their ideas being crushed or stolen, something ever so common in autocratic business systems. Being able to start and finish a job is something charity workers are proud of. In other business’s it is not uncommon to begin a particular project or at least do the leg work and then pass it on up the line or hand it over to another team. Charity workers have high task identity as they can rest assured they can finish what they start and get feedback for their efforts, which in most charity work is positive feedback enhancing job satisfaction once again.

There are always few downsides to working in any industry and charities cannot escape this despite their positive aspects. Due to budget restrictions extracurricular skills training is often not provided meaning self development can be slower than working in other industries. Job competition can be high as many people realise this line of work has so many personal benefits. This can make career progression slow meaning those who seek the thrill of moving up the ladder may be dissuaded from this line of work.

Even though training is not provided most people can learn online and simply through self development on the job. This is not uncommon wither as with the high job satisfaction involved many employees want to self improve to better help their project because they feel a responsibility to do so. This is a far cry from the business world where many people feel self development goes unnoticed and only helps to make their employer wealthier in exchange for giving up free time for something that will go unrecognised. On balance it seems the personal rewards that come out of working for a charity, far outweigh any other business.
